Kakapo Christmas Extravaganza

During our school wide craftyt kids week - Kakapo class decided to create a christmas experience for the whole school to come and visit on Friday afternoon.
This involved a short christmassy dvd inside our classroom that was completely blacked out except the 6x christmas lights (thanks Paris!). Around the walls were large paintings of the nativity scene, santa and his sleigh as well as the reindeer and some elves. We made a christmas tree from toitoi 'flowers'and decorated it as well as put up another christmas tree.
Some of our boys also made rice crackles to give to all 164 children in the school. Ms D also made lots of shortbread that some of our girls iced. Everyone in the school got a small christmas decorated brown paper bag that contained the rice crackle and the shortbread.
It was a great experience and the Kakapo kids worked really well independetly for most of the week.

Check out this (dark) video for what it was like...

Space

Space is a place that's gigantic. The sun is a massive thing. Galaxies are huge and earth is so small compared to the massive waste land called space. It has no air and is massive to us beacause compared to space we're all midgets.

SPACE

Space is such a big place
But tiny compared to our galaxy
With 8 planets in it
Not counting Pluto
With a mnemonic that goes with it
My Very Elderly Mother
Just Sits Under Netball Poles

BY CHRISTIAN RISATI

Space poem

Space is...
fullof massive planets.
Its ginourmous and
enormous.
Compared to space
we are micromini.
We are tiny compared to the giant planets in space

By natalie

space

New Zealand is tiny
The earth is huge
The sun is enormous compared to pluto
Pluto is mini
Galaxy is big but not as big as big asthe universe
Universe is tremendously gigantic
So space is a place sarounded by starsand amoung those stars there is the sun
The sun is our star
The sun sun is immensily

Taumaia Schuster
Microscopic tiny little stars surrounded by many planets. Massive planets, huge plants, tiny planets, titanic planets . The sun lighting planets midget or large. twinkling bright stars shining in the night giving to all a bit of light.
BY JACKSON SHERVEY

'GALAXY' (:

The Galaxy itself is made up of many things.
It's very enourmous.
People would think how this Galaxy was formed.
The solar system was formed by a big ball of gas and dust.
If could travel the universe , you would see tonnes of huge groups of stars - these are called 'Galaxies'.

Space Poem

Space is gigantic compared to the planets,
if space was a human it would call us,
microscopic, miniture, midgets.
Space is so gigantic it probably goes on forever.

BIG SPACE!

Space is ginormous,
but not enormous.
Space is telescopic,
but not microscopic
Space is humungous,
compared to my
uncle fungus.
Space gigantic
compared to my
aunty who is a
space fanatic.

by Thomas Smith!

SPACE AND SIZE

Saturn, a ginormous part of the Solar System
Pluto, now called a Dwarf Planet
And Jupiter, the biggest planet in Space
Can the huge Uranus, have a more outrageous name?
Earth is the 3rd planet from the sun

And Mercury, the nnumber 1 planet
Neptune, one of the Gas Giants
Dwarf Planets, the baby sister to Earth

Sun, the biggest star in the Universe
In space, big Mars is a force to be reckoned with
Zero Gravity in our gigantic Universe
Enormous Venus, the LOVE PLANET!!

SPACE IS A BEAUTIFUL THING

BY ALBERT

Space

Space is enormous,
It is massive,
We are tiny,
But space is massive,
space is vast and gigantic,
We are miniscule,
Space is gimormous.

Moving

On Friday 29th of April my family moved houses to Johnsonville. We got to have our first sleep. The good thing is that it was much bigger and much quieter. The bad thing is that we are far away from this school and we have to wake up early to get away from the traffic and not to get late for school. I also might be moving schools because of that reason. I don't want to move school's during this year I would rather just stay here and move next year.

The Fish Net

On Saturday my uncle asked me if I wanted to go put the fishing net out. i said yes so I was standing on the beach watching him go out. When he got back he asked me if I wanted to get it in the morningat 6 o'clock. I said yes and so we ended up getting 5 fish they were all really big and it gave us a good feed. The fish that we actuallygot were 2 Karwi and we caught a red cod but we had to throw it back because it had been munted by a shark.

Dad's birthday

On April 25, it was my Dad's birthday. We set up the cooking on the table, as well as the plates, forks and spoons. The party started at 12:00 pm and it was 11:25 am when my friend Gian came. At the same time, my Mum's friend came and gave my Dad a gift.
At 12:00pm all of the guests came at the same time, including Angelica, Kyla and Jericho.
When the guests started to leave, I went upstairs to sleep. When I woke up, it was 7:30pm and just in time for dinner!

My sleepover

On 30/4/11 I had a sleepover. I invited some people from our class and some other people. We melted some chocolate to dip apples in. While we waited for the chocolate to melt we played tag. I got some awesome presents like Silly Bandz, glitter and a gold necklace which is supposed to make the wearer have safe travel. My dad bought some glow sticks. We had singing competitions and made stuff with the glow sticks.
We stayed up until about 2.40 am!
4 girls came                                                                                                                                                          3 balloons were blown                                                                                                                                        2 people were late                                                                                                                                              1 chair broke

RUGBY

On one of my rugby games in the holidays my team played Hutt Old Boys Marist. I knew that it was going to be a hard game, they were the only team to have beaten Eastbourne.
We lost by a lot, our team was very disappointed because we knew we could play better then that.

Movie Time

In the holidays I went to the movies with my brothers and cousins. After we brought our tickets to watch Fast and Furious5 we went to Countdown to buy some food to eat while watching the movie. After that, the movie started,it started at
4:00-6:30pm. The movie was so funny and cool. When the movie finished we went to buy some fish'n'chips for dinner and ate it at the beach. After dinner we played a game of touch. Then we had to say good-bye to our cousins.

Prince William and Kate Middleton got hitched

In the holidays I didn’t do much but watch the royal wedding. On Friday 29th of April Prince William and Kate Middleton got married at Westminster Abbey. There was a big group of guest in the church approx. 1600 guest when Kate Middleton arrived at Westminster Abbey the crowd began to roar. Kate’s dress was described as the stunning modern dress. 3 young bridesmaids and 2 groomsmens were at the ceremony. When the wedding reception was finished the couple got in the carriage that William's parents rode on to Buckingham Palace. The crowd ran to Buckingham Palace to see the couple at the balcony. About 1 billion people watched the royal couple get married.

The Game Of Two Halves

On Saturday the 30th of April, I went to the Hurricanes vs Reds match at the caketin.

We caught the train to the stadium and then we got the tickets and got into the stadium. We went to support my cousins relation Albert(Alfred) Anae who plays for the Reds. The Hurricanes were leading 22-5 after tries to Aaron Cruden, Faifili Levave, Neemia Tialata and Andre Taylor.

The Reds came back to lead 26-25 but in the last minute Albert gave away a penalty and Aaron Cruden kicked the penalty to win the game 26-28. we were guttered but we got autographs so that was cool.

Our netball game

In the holidayson the 28th of April our school year 7 & 8 girls had a netball game against St Orans. It was a tough game because they have some great skills and most of them are fast.Only 5 of our girls turned up which was me,Sophie,Taumaia,Hannah and Natalie,so Caitlin had to play for us and we had to get a girl from St Orans to play for us as well.We had no subs so we were all tired.St Orans won 23-10.

Foxton Camp

On the 27th of April, I went to a camp in Foxton with my Mum and Dad.

At the camp there was two trampolines, a big playground, a flying fox and a small rugby field. Every single day we had a yum breakfast, lunch and dinner. They were big feeds as well. I was there with two other kids. We played on the trampolines alot until the table tennis table came and we kind of halved that time with the trampoline. Every night we played on the piano and sang. We even had the guitar with us.

On the 1st of May, all of us got money. That was my fun holiday.

The Octopus

During the holidays I went to Castlepoint for 1 week. While I was there I went swimming also I went to the shops, One night we had a bonfire.
Then one day we went for a walk, Jacob stopped at the sand dunes and I stopped at the rock pools while my Mum and Dad kept walking.
While I was wandering around the rock pools looking for stones to hit with a stick I came across an octopus. Next when my Mum and Dad came back I told them what I'd found, so then my Mum got it on a stick and put it in the sea.

RUGBY AND MY MOUTHGUARD

On Saturday 30th April, I played my second game of rugby at Petone rec. The only problem was that i wasn't accostomed to having a mouthguard and you can guess what happened i forgot it. 5 mins before the game i got a spare mouthguard but i had to mould it. Some guy offered to take me over to the club in his golf cart to get some boiling water. After i moulded it we raced back to the rec, we got there just before the game started. I sprinted to my team. The score was 49-17 to us. Oh and by the way i scored my first two tries of the season.

Spectacular Movies

In the holidays I went to the movies, I went with my friend called Max, his mum and his cousin called Callum. We got a whole box of popcorn each and a large coke after that we went up stairs and waited for the movie to get ready. The movie was called 'Mars needs mums', while we were waiting for the movie Max punched some popcorn out of my hand and half of it fell out then these little kids started eating the popcorn that fell on the ground.
Then the movie started it was about marshians stealing mums and injected them and took their memories out and gave it to the nanibots so they could raise the baby marshians

Kakapo at Wellington Zoo

On Saturday 24th of April I went to the Wellington Zoo with Hannah and her mum Mary Ann.
During the day they have sessions where you can see people feeding the animals and they give a lecture where you can go along and find out information about an animal.

We went to a feeding time where they were feeding a sick Kakapo that had been rescued from Codfish Island. The Kakapo is the worlds heaviest parrot. They were telling us about how the Kakapo is in danger of being extinct. There is just over 100 kakapo left in the world. They told us about their website thay have to help save the kakapo www.kakaporecovery.org.nz where we can find more information about the bird. I found the talk interesting because I didn't realise how endangered the Kakapo is.

On Saturday the 16th, my brother Xavier played a game of rugby at Wellington College. I wish I didnt go because it was so rainy and muddy and I got soaked. His team played really well and they won 66-O.

Norm Hewitt's Visit

Norm Hewitt the famous former All Black hooker and Dancing with the Stars Star (champion of the first season) came to Sacred Heart Petone. He told us about his life as an All Black and how he got there. He presented some Duffy books and made our class get up and stand in front of the whole school. Mr Hewitt did this because he knows that we need to stop worrying about being cool and be better role models. Then he came to Kakapo class and showed us some dance moves from the cha cha, but he needed a girl to dance with..... Karen bravely put up her hand to dance with him. He was a real inspiration.

Smoking Sucks!

Today, as part of our DARE programme we looked at the thousands of chemicals contained in a cigarette.

Snr Constable Blue showed us how a bottle could smoke a cigarette.

The bottle had a small hole in its lid through which went a tube. At one end of the tube was a cigarette and at the other end inside the bottle was a cotton ball. After the cigarette was lit Blue squeezed the bottle repeatedly to show the action of lungs inhaling and exhaling the smoke from a cigarette.  Blue then showed us the amount of tar collected on the cotton ball. There was a huge amount and that was after only one cigarette!
(Photos of Snr Constable Blue talking to Kakapo and showing the tar inside the cotton ball.)
